Eleven journalists from Syria, Jordan and Lebanon covered the Third Brussels Conference “Supporting the future of Syria and the region” with OPEN Media Hub assistance on 12-14 March 2019. The Conference, co-chaired by the EU and the UN focused on mobilising international support for the Syrian people and contributing to the achievement of a lasting political solution to the Syria crisis. OPEN Media Hub mentors and experts worked with the journalists to help them gather information, make interviews and produce their stories choosing from the wide variety of events taking place at and around the Conference, which started with two Days of Dialogue at European Parliament, included a number of side events organized by civils society organizations and activists and ended with a Foreign Ministers Conference announcing the pledges of the international community in support of Syria.
The Days of Dialogue gathered over 800 representatives of civil society for an active exchange with policy makers on key aspects of the crisis such as its impact on youth, the massive displacement of Syrians and the attempts at forced returns, the needs for regional socio-economic recovery, the perspectives for justice and social cohesion in Syria, education and child protection. The side events focused on issues such as the Forced mass displacement of Syrian, the fate of the thousands of people detained or disappeared in the country, the impact of the war on children and the role women play in finding solutions to the crisis. At the Foreign Ministers Conference Participants announced their pledges for both Syria and the region: 6.2 billion EUR for 2019 and multi-year pledges of close to 2.1 billion EUR for 2020 and beyond.
