7 Best Shows To Watch This New Year

2022 saw the release of several of your favorite shows getting a new season, and while that excitement is unmatched, we couldn’t help but pay attention to all the news shows that were released this year. Whether it was on Netflix, Prime Video, Hulu, or any other streaming service, there was plenty to look forward to every single month. While many shows were released in 2022, we couldn’t help but pick some of our favorites, based on the story, cast, the ratings they received from audiences, and reviews from critics.

You might have watched all the shows we have mentioned or only some of them, but we do recommend that these shows make it to your watchlist. It is important to note, that this list is only the tip of the iceberg and if you agree with us, do let us know in the comments at the of the article. Without further ado, we hope this article helps you pick your next binge because here are the top 7 shows of 2022:

1.1899

Everyone was a little apprehensive about this show because it was being created by the same people who created Dark, which became really popular overnight. It was safe to say that people had reservations about 1899, but as they learned more about it, they realized that it was going to be significantly different from Dark, and that was probably for the best. 1899 was more horror and mystery than science fiction, and as the title suggests, it was a period drama as well. The series followed a group of European immigrants who are making their way to New York City in the hopes of starting something new. However, it doesn’t take long for 1899 to take a darker turn when the ship clashes with another, and thus ensues a series of unfortunate events.

1899

After the series was released, it was at the top for a long time, and viewers were very pleased with the plot and diversity that the show presented. It is definitely a good thing that the creators, Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese, have a deal with Netflix, which means there will be more content like Dark and 1899 in the future!

2.Inventing Anna

Now some people might have forgotten about this show since it was released earlier in 2022, however, we still remember it clearly and wholeheartedly believe that it has been one of the best shows this year, and kept us on the edge of our seats from start to finish. While there was a lot of true crime on our screens this year, you know, with Dahmer and everything, Inventing Anna was different, and hit all the right spots. Inventing Anna revolved around Anna Delvey, who successfully scammed an entire nation, especially the rich folks of New York City. Anna Delvey was the perfect scammer, who committed the perfect crime, and although she frustrated the viewers with her antics, we couldn’t help but appreciate how well this show had been made.

Inventing Anna

Julia Garner played the role of Anna Delvey, and almost too perfectly, she even got the accent right, which became very popular after the release of this drama miniseries. The best part about this series is that it is based on real events, and you can read all about the real Anna online, and there are podcasts out there about her too. However, we highly recommend that dramatized version on Netflix!

3.Wednesday

If there is one character from the Addams Family who deserved an entire spin-off series, it is none other than Wednesday Addams, which brings up to the very popular, and recently released show, Wednesday, which is now available to stream on Netflix. Wednesday has been one of the most anticipated titles of 2022, and the hype was absolutely worth it. Wednesday served as the perfect binge, and while it had several interesting, deadly, and magical elements to it, one couldn’t help but notice the shining star of the show, Wednesday, aka Jenna Ortega. Although this show wasn’t the start of her career, it has surely put her under the limelight and she is doing a brilliant job so far.

Wednesday

One of the best things about Wednesday as a show, and the reason why it became so popular, was because a lot of people resonated with it, especially our beloved main character. Everyone has been an outcast at some point in their life, and Wednesday made being an outcast the coolest thing ever. There were definitely some darker and bloody scenes in the show, but you can watch it with your friends and family!

4.Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities

People were shocked when Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities was announced for the first time, because while it had been in the works for a while, the majority were kept under wraps, and we understand why. Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities, as the title suggests, was created by the legend himself, Guillermo del Toro, who has a very intriguing and creative mind, and this anthology series was proof of that. There were a total of eight episodes in this series, all of which belonged to the horror genre, and rightfully so. Since it was an anthology series, each episode had a different story, set in different time periods, and different locations. Every episode and every story had a new cast, and something so unique about the series, that it was almost difficult to wrap our heads around the concepts sometimes.

Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities

Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities was quick to become incredibly popular around Halloween 2022, and if you haven’t watched it yet, we highly recommend it. Could Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities be the next Black Mirror? Or should we give it a couple more seasons to get there?

5.Moon Knight

We have gone through a lot of lists that belonged to critics, fans, and just viewers in general, who spent some time of their making a list of the best Marvel projects in 2022. Let’s face it, Marvel Studios does not shy away from new content and giving the fans what they want. 2022 saw the release of four Marvel shows which were She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, Ms. Marvel, I am Groot and Moon Knight. All these shows were very different from each other and introduced some new characters to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While it was an exciting time for the fans, one show, in particular, stood out and became popular not just amongst Marvel fans, but viewers in general, and that was Moon Knight.

Moon Knight

Anyone and everyone were watching Moon Knight, and rightfully so because along with the cast and plot, it was very different from anything Marvel Studios had created, and that change in pace is exactly what the fans were looking for. The show revolved around the story of Steven Grant and Marc Spector, both brilliantly played by Oscar Isaac, both in and as, Moon Knight. Another brilliant thing about Moon Knight is the fact that it doesn’t matter whether you’re new to Marvel, or an old fan, this show is the perfect one to start with!

6.The Staircase

A series featuring Toni Collette and Colin Firth? We must be dreaming! Well, that wasn’t the case, because the Staircase featured these two brilliant cast members, along with some well-known names like Sophie Turner, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Juliette Binoche, Olivia DeJonge, and Dane DeHaan amongst others, who gave some of their best performances in The Staircase. Nobody knew what to expect from The Staircase, but as we watched the episodes, one after the other, and the plot unraveled between our eyes, we couldn’t believe how this show has gone under the radar for a lot of audiences, which is one of the main reasons we’ve added it to this list, aside from how brilliant a mystery this show is.

The Staircase

The Staircase follows the life of Michael Peterson and the suspicious death of his wife, and who is the main suspect in this case? The man himself, Michael aka Colin Firth, has delivered a brilliant performance. There are several pieces to this puzzle, and this entire show will get you questioning your own guessing abilities because you can almost never tell whether or not Michael killed his wife. We recommend watching this show and making some notes of your own!

7.Severance

Another show which was released towards the beginning of 2022, but has left an everlasting impact on its viewers, enough for them to rate it as one of the best shows this year, despite the release of several others after Severance. Apple TV has done a good job this year with renewals and a few fresh stories, but they knocked it out of the park with Severance. The lead of Severance is none other than Adam Scott, who plays the role of Mark. You think Adam Scott and your mind immediately goes to comedy, but no, this time around, he has been a part of this drama series and it seems to have paid off, especially with the 97% rating on rotten tomatoes, which is an infrequent number for series on streaming platforms.

Severance

Imagine your memories being surgically divided into different categories, eventually, there is bound to be an error of some kind. Severance follows a dramatic and twisted story of sorts that revolves around Mark and his team of office workers. This is the kind of show that you won’t grasp until you watch it, and based on the reviews and ratings, this might just be the best show on Apple TV this year!

Conclusion

The entertainment industry is growing every year, and while people love to sit in the theatres and watch a movie on the big screen, one can’t help but appreciate the comfort of tv shows at home. The ability to pause, binge, fast forward, and of course, the fact that there are several episodes and possibly more seasons, is just a different kind of fun, and we got to experience plenty of that in 2022! Do let us know in the comments which were your favorite shows of 2022, and whether or not you agree with our list. Meanwhile, you can also check out our list of top movies that were released this year.
