16th September 2018

Short summary:  There is an Azerbaijani proverb, “The lion is known from where it is lying.” When you want to get to know people, look around and look how tidy they are. In fact, the saying is true at some point, as tidiness is almost the most obvious manifestation of self-respect. Talking about tidiness, it is not only about the tidiness of our clothes or our houses, the tidiness of the cities and villages we are living in is also major responsibility of every other human being. Nowadays one of the biggest problems of the world are the ecological imbalance, and thus atmosphere pollution. In fact, those who eradicate the order of the world, and those who harm severely to our environment, are killing our planet. Therefore, World Cleanup Day is celebrated by European Union’s representation in more than 40 countries every 15th of September by cleaning plastic wastes. According to European experts, 80-85 percent of the coastal areas in the European Union are dumped with plastic wastes and about 8 million plastic products are thrown to the sea every year. Almost 95% of the waste falls to the bottom of the sea, damaging fauna and flora. The sea brings only 5 percent of the plastic waste to shore. The head of the EU Delegation, the British Ambassador to Azerbaijan, their family members, employees of the Ecosphere Social and Ecological Center among the participants. Students also joined the campaign cleaning one of the beaches in Novkhani District, Baku. It should be noted that the EU Delegation in Azerbaijan is one of the 40 delegations worldwide to join the campaign.
