International Coastal Cleanup Day celebrated in Baku

In connection with “International Coastal Cleanup Day”, the EU Delegation to Azerbaijan has been part of the Caspian Sea’s Novkhani coast with the support of the Ecological and Natural Resources Ministry, EkoSfera Social-Ecological Center.
About 300 volunteers from the European Union embassies, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources and public representatives attended the rally.
More than 5 hectares of coastal strips have been cleaned from plastic wastes in the past decade, with the theme “We urge everyone to join us to protect our world from pollution, not just by cleaning it.” This kind of awareness campaigns were organized by the ETSN in other Caspian coastal zones.
The European Union’s representative office in more than 40 countries has also highlighted the “International Coastal Cleanup Day” by removing plastic wastes, according to estimates by European experts, 80-85 percent of the coastal areas in the European Union are rubbish with plastic wastes and about 95 percent of the waste is falling to the bottom of the sea, damaging fauna and flora, leaving only about 5 percent of the sea’s shale.
