Title: The Long Wait of Young Unaccompanied Migrants in Italy

Short summary: 25.846 unaccompanied minors reached Italy from countries in Northern Africa in 2016. They were mainly nationals of Eritrea, Egypt and West African states, such as The Gambia, Nigeria and Guinea. This was the highest number since dangerous sea trips through the Mediterranean started in the 1990’s. While Italian legislation offers a full protection to these boys and girls, the government reception capacity was put under heavy pressure, financially and logistically. Moreover, many children had different destinations in mind, seeing Italy as a mere transit point on their way to Northern Europe. They thus disappeared from reception centers, leaving question marks about their fate. The article combines analysis and datas, trying to contrast misinterpretations and partial views of the phenomenon. Commentaries from social workers, lawyers, NGOs representatives are included, adding complexity to numbers.

The data on the number of foreign minors who arrived in Italy by sea in 2016, released at the beginning of January by the Ministry of the Interior and thereafter taken up by NGOs and various associations, caused more than one voice to be raised.
