Details: | Located on the outskirts of the city of Casablanca, the Médiouna landfill spread over an area of 70 hectares. Opened in 1986, the landfill receives around 5,000 tonnes of waste daily. The piled up trash rises to a height of 45 meters, and threatens to collapse at any time. The risk of explosion due to the fermentation of waste threatens the lives of sorters who make a living from artisanal waste recovery. On the other hand, seasonal precipitation promotes the release of leachate which is absorbed by the soil. Experts estimate that the water table is polluted within a perimeter of 15 kilometers around the landfill. |
