Disney+ will launch a brand-new, eagerly awaited show on its platform this year. Based on Gene Luen Yang’s graphic novel of the same name, American Born Chinese. It is a distinctive and ground-breaking production that looks to be one of the year’s most memorable shows. Charles Yu and Kelvin Yu are the authors of American Born Chinese. Additionally, Destin Daniel Cretton will direct the action-comedy.
In the meantime, Lucy Liu has declared that she will also be acting as the series director. The show’s creators, Gene Luen Yang, Destin Daniel Cretton, Kelvin Yu, Melvin Mar, and Jake Kasdan, are the initial authors. Sex Tape, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, and Jumanji: The Next Level are just a few of the movies on which Mar and Kasdan have previously collaborated.
American Born Chinese production firms are MarVista Entertainment and 20th Television. The series is likely to be a big hit given the impressive cast of Asian-American actors it has assembled. Here is all the information you require regarding the show that’s coming
The series American Born Chinese recounts Jin Wang’s tale. Jin, a teenager of Chinese descent living in the United States, faces identity issues in a society where white American people predominate.
The show leads watchers on a quest for personal growth. As Jin gains experience navigating the complexities of his cultural heritage and the expectations of those around him, it becomes more apparent.
He is drawn into a conflict between Chinese mythology’s Gods when he encounters Wei-Chen, a foreign exchange student.
A character known as “The Monkey King” is the most prominent of the Gods. The 16th-century book Journey to the West featured the first appearance of this figure in Chinese folklore.
There are several legends involving this Monkey King who practices kung fu. However, the most famous tale centers on The Monkey King’s struggle to embrace his appearance. He also starts to change, transforming his exterior appearance into a more human shape.
A friend ultimately persuades him that he must embrace his original form to solve his problems after becoming trapped in a cave in a mountain. The Monkey King can quickly flee his rocky prison once he returns to his regular size and shape.
The show examines issues of ethnicity, identification, and belonging through the lens of a story about coming of age. As a result, it is an appropriate and pertinent addition to the Disney+ cast of American Born Chinese.
Ben Wang will portray Jin Wang as the primary character in American-Born Chinese. Most recently, he gained notoriety for his roles in the movies Sex Appeal and Good Egg. In the TV show MacGuyver in 2021, he debuted as an actor.
Ben is also recognized for writing and directing the short film Walter and France that same year. Yann Yann Yeo and Chin Han separately portray Jin’s parents, Simon and Christine. Yeo, a Malaysian actress, gained popularity for the role of Wet Season.
Chin Han, meanwhile, most recently appeared as Lau in The Dark Knight and Shang Tsung in Mortal Kombat. The ensemble also includes Michelle Yeoh, an actress who won an Oscar for her work in Everything Everywhere At Once. She’ll be portraying Guanyin in the performance.
In Chinese mythology, the bodhisattva Guanyin is linked to mercy and compassion. She’s also called the “Goddess of Mercy” and is one of the most well-known and revered gods in Chinese society.
She is frequently pictured holding a lotus blossom or a vase, smiling serenely, and donning flowing robes and a headdress. Guanyin is usually invoked in times of need in Chinese mythology because it is thought that she can bring about blessings and ease pain.
Ke Huy Quan and Stephanie Hsu, two previous co-stars, rejoin Yeoh. Before quitting acting, Quan was a juvenile actor who appeared in films like The Goonies, Indiana Jones, and the Temple of Doom.
He attributes his emergence from the background and his return to leading parts to the success of the Korean film Parasite at the 2019 Academy Awards. He is currently set to portray Freddy Wong in the Disney+ series. Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings also featured Stephanie Hsu.
Additionally, she will portray Shiji Niangniang, a recurrent character. In Chinese folk religion and Taoism, Shiji is a deity frequently linked to the conception, childbirth, and safeguarding of women and children.
Sun Wukong, also known as “The Monkey King,” will be played by Daniel Wu. It’s uncertain if he will support Jin Wang or work against him. Given the similarities in their characters’ struggles with identity, he will indeed impart some severe lessons to Jin. In his part as Wei-Chen, Jim Liu will also make his acting debut.
He is a foreign exchange student who becomes friends with Jin Wang and eventually exposes him to Chinese mythology.
Sydney Taylor, who will play Jin Wang’s girlfriend, Amelia, will join the ensemble. The Jade Emperor, a recurring figure, will be James Hong. Other recurrent characters include Jimmy O. Yang as Ao Guang, Ronny Chieng as Ji Gong, and Poppy Liu as Princess Iron Fan.
There has yet to be a formal trailer available. A few major characters are introduced in a short teaser trailer and an In-Production Featurette made public by Disney+.
Additionally, it includes some behind-the-scenes videos. On March 12, 2023, a television spot was aired. The 95th Annual Academy Awards served as the occasion for the announcement of the release date for the new series.
Disney+ eventually announced the exciting new series’ premiere date in conjunction with the TV spot unveiled on March 12. On May 24, 2023, American Born Chinese will debut on Disney+.
On Instagram, Melvin Mar, the show’s executive producer, revealed that production had started on the Disney+ series at the end of February 2022. Early in July 2022, Ke Huy Quan announced on Instagram that the series’ shooting had ended.
This year, there are a ton of fantastic movies and TV shows to look forward to it. One is American Born Chinese, a future Disney+ TV show based on a definitive book by Gene Luen Yang.
The video shows that evil forces are approaching and portals between our universe and others are opening. We also see right away how grandiose and genre-defying the series will be. We eagerly anticipate more.
