Andrew Russell Garfield was born in Los Angeles, California, on August 20, 1983. His family moved from Los Angeles to Epsom, Surrey, United Kingdom, when he was three years old. He began acting when he was nine years old, taking acting classes and appearing in youth theatre productions. His interest in acting really developed when he was 16 years old after taking a theatre studies class at school. He attended Priory Preparatory School in Banstead and the City of London Freemen’s School in Ashtead. He trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama, University of London. Garfield began his career acting on stage in 2004, winning a Manchester Evening News Theatre Award for Best Newcomer.
