There are a lot of brilliant things that are about to happen in 2023, and who would have thought that one of those things would include the first-ever live-action Barbie feature movie? We surely weren’t expecting it, but when Warner Bros first announced it, everyone was over the moon, and the ensemble cast only made it better. Barbie will be directed by Greta Gerwig and written by Noah Baumbach, so undoubtedly, it will be a blockbuster hit.
Ever since we were all children, Barbies have been an important part of everyone’s lives. Who doesn’t like playing with Barbie? It’s a wonder that it took so long for a production house and crew to pick up this concept and turn it into a live-action, but better late than never.
Although most details about Barbie have been kept under wraps, increasing the curiosity of fans, we’re still going to try and cover as much base as possible. Here’s everything you need to know about Gerwig’s project of a lifetime, Barbie, from the plot to the cast, to the release date and much more:

Not much, if anything, is known about the plot of Barbie. Director and writer Greta Gerwig is known for her subtle comedy and sometimes outlandish vision. We’re fairly certain there will be a romance between Barbie and Ken, since those two names go together like milk and cookies.
They just make sense, and it would be fun to see an origin story for one of the most popular American couples in history. In fact, even IMDb has been very vague about the movie, as the official synopsis states, “Barbie lives in Barbie Land and then a story happens.”
However, we do believe that this movie will be centered around the realization which Barbie goes through, that perfection comes from inside and not outside. Hopefully, as we edge closer to the release date, we will find out more about the plot, if not, viewers are in for a surprise!
The iconic doll and title character is played by Australian actress Margot Robbie, who appears to be the spitting image of the children’s toy. Her breakout role was that of Naomi Lapaglia in Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street oppositie Leonardo DiCaprio in 2013.
She quickly became a leading lady in Hollywood, appearing in a wide range of roles. She portrayed Harley Quinn in DC Comics’ recent Suicide Squad films, and she has taken on several other (semi-)biographical projects, including Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Mary Queen of Scots, and I, Tonya. She is also one of Barbie’s producers. She can be seen in the upcoming Hollywood Golden Age film Babylon, set to release on January 6, 2023.
Leading man and recent action star Ryan Gosling can be seen as the main iteration of Ken, Barbie’s tailor-made dream man. In the movie, Gosling appears with bleach-blond hair, incredibly chiseled abs, and a spray tan in a shade of orange that rivals Cheeto dust.
Gosling’s career has spanned across multiple genres. His most popular role may be that of Noah Calhoun in 2004’s romantic drama The Notebook, based on the Nicholas Sparks novel of the same name.
He has appeared in romantic comedies such as Crazy, Stupid, Love (2011), science fiction films like Blade Runner 2049 (2017), and even a musical, La La Land (2016), for which he won a Golden Globe Award and was nominated for several others. In the summer of 2022, he appeared as Six in Netflix’s action thriller The Gray Man, alongside Chris Evans. Coincidentally, the younger Evans brother, Scott, also will appear in Barbie, but we do not know his role at this time.
Comedian Will Ferrell stars as the CEO of Mattel, the toy manufacturer which produces Barbie dolls. Ferrell is an established funnyman, who first appeared as a cast member on NBC’s Saturday Night Live in the mid-1990s. In his nearly 30-year career, he has co-written and starred in a number of comedies, both family-friendly and irreverent. Some of our favorites include Elf, The Other Guys, and Kicking and Screaming.
Sex Education stars Ncuti Gatwa and Emma Mackey are included on the star-studded cast list. Gatwa seems to play a variation of Ken and can be seen in the trailer. Mackey’s role is undisclosed, but she is commonly mistaken for her castmate Margot Robbie, so we wonder if she is also playing Barbie or some version of her.
Other notable cast members include comedian Kate McKinnon, America Ferrera, Michael Cera, Academy-Award winner Emerald Fennell, Rhea Perlman, Simu Liu, Hari Nef, Kingsley Ben-Adir, and comedian/writer Issa Rae.
We would have to write a novel to go into detail about every incredible cast member, but hopefully, this overview gave you an idea of the star power coming to the big screen!
Barbie originally was scheduled for several release dates throughout 2017, 2018, and 2020. However, for reasons, that never worked out, albeit, Barbie is finally here and it will surely be worth the wait. The movie will release exclusively in theatres on July 21, 2023.
The first teaser trailer for Barbie was shown prior to the earliest screenings of Avatar: The Way of Water on December 15, 2022. The trailer and a poster were released worldwide on December 16, 2022.
The teaser trailer features a parody of the opening sequence of 2001: A Space Odyssey, the 1968 science fiction film. To add to the dramatic, earth-shattering event, the teaser trailer is narrated by Helen Mirren. The teaser might leave you a little confused but ultimately it looks like a whole lot of fun!
While there are a lot of missing pieces in this puzzle, what we do know for sure is that Barbie is on its way to becoming one of the best movies of 2023, along with being the most-anticipated, of course.
Stay tuned for more updates about Barbie, and until then, keep thinking about how this movie is going to be a cinematic masterpiece! Do let us know in the comments which cast member you are looking forward to seeing the most because we do know there are several options to choose from.
