Few celebrities maintain a career so consistent that they are known across multiple generations for their work. Christina Applegate is one such celebrity who has succeeded in this, having begun her career on a 1980s sitcom and currently starring in a hit Netflix series.
Christina Applegate has seen her share of troubles, especially over the last few years, but she has continued to power through and set an example for people all over the world. As she continues being an inspiration and a talented actress, here’s everything you need to know about her:
Over her almost 40 years in the industry, Applegate has amassed a net worth of about $25 million, supposedly making $125 million per episode of the American comedy series Up All Night from 2011-2012. Prior to that, she was reported to have made $140 million per episode of Samantha Who?, an American comedy romance in which she starred from 2007 to 2009. In addition to these high-paying roles, it’s important to note that Applegate has acted not only on television but also in films and on stage.
Christina Applegate was born on November 25, 1971, in Los Angeles, California. As a child, she trained as a dancer in various styles, including jazz and ballet. She made her television debut in 1972, appearing alongside her mother on the soap opera Days of Our Lives and landing a commercial for Playtex baby bottles. Her film debut came later in 1981 with the horror film Jaws of Satan. She appeared as a young Grace Kelly in the 1983 television biopic Grace Kelly and guest-starred on several television shows, including Father Murphy, Charles in Charge, Family Ties, and Silver Spoons.
From 1987 to 1997, she portrayed Kelly Bundy on the Fox sitcom Married… with Children. Throughout those 10 years, she guest-stared on a number of television shows and hosted both Saturday Night Live (1993) and MADtv (1996). She was one of the founding members of The Pussycat Dolls, who debuted at Johnny Depp’s Viper Room in 1995. In 1998, she portrayed the title role in the sitcom Jesse, which aired until 2000, and she was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for the role.
Applegate has appeared in countless TV shows and movies, including Friends and Anchorman: he Legend of Ron Burgundy. She made her Broadway debut in the 2004 revival of the musical Sweet Charity, during which she permanently broke her foot, somewhat ending her dance career. However, she was nominated for the 2005 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical. She starred in the ABC comedy Samantha Who? from 2007 to 2009. Applegate took on several voice roles and also appeared in the comedy films Bad Moms and A Bad Moms Christmas.
In 2008, Applegate confirmed that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer, and shortly afterward, she underwent a double mastectomy. Her cancer was inherited geneitcally, but thankfully, it went into remission.
Most recently, she starred in Netflix’s dark comedy Dead to Me alongside Linda Cardellini. In August 2021, she announced that she had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, but she still went on to complete filming of Dead to Me’s third and final season. She received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on November 14, 2022, and was accompanied by Linda Cardellini and her Married… with Children co-stars Katey Sagal and David Faustino.
Applegate has managed to keep much of her family life private. She is the daughter of Robert William “Bob” Applegate, who was a record producer and record company executive, and Nancy Priddy, a singer and actress. She has two half-siblings from her father’s second marriage, Alise and Kyle. Applegate is married to Martyn LeNoble and has a daughter named Sadie.
Having been in the spotlight since her career began in the 1980s, Christina Applegate has been part of a few high-profile relationships. In 1988, she dated 21 Jump Street actor Richard Grieco. She was a regular guest star on the show, and supposedly met her next boyfriend when he booked a guest spot. She dated Brad Pitt briefly in 1989, but the two reportedly parted ways after she spent the night chatting up someone else at the 1989 MTV Video Music Awards. Next, she briefly began seeing Sebastian Bach, the frontman of the band Skid Row, and then was rumored to be dating Christian Slater.
She met her first husband, actor Johnathon Schaech, in 1997. The couple dated for four years until ultimately getting married in October 2001. Unfortunately, they separated and filed for divorce in 2005, claiming it was a mutual decision. Both Schaech and Applegate have spoken kindly of each other in interviews since their divorce.
After her divorce, Applegate was in an on-again, off-again relationship with skateboarder and photographer Lee Grivas. Sadly, during a period when they were not together, Grivas died of a drug overdose in June 2008 at the age of 26.
Finally, Applegate met her current husband, Dutch bassist Martyn LeNoble, in 2008. They became engaged on Valentine’s Day, 2010. She gave birth to their daughter Sadie in January 2011, and the couple married in February 2013. Applegate has said that LeNoble was a huge support to her throughout her battle with breast cancer. In 2010, she told US Weekly, “I have a small but mighty support system and Martyn has really been an incredible part of my life. Without him, I don’t know if I could’ve gone through any of it. He came around at a time when there was a lot of loss in my life on many levels, so he’s been a really incredible help.” He continues to support her following her recent diagnosis of multiple sclerosis in 2021.
Throughout her career, Christina Applegate has provided tons of laughs to us on both the silver and small screens. If you’re interested in checking out more of her work, we highly recommend the Netflix series Dead to Me (final season out on Netflix now!) and her comedy film Bad Mom from 2016. We wish her all the best as she continues to navigate life with multiple sclerosis.
