Viewers from all across the world are thrilled about Netflix picking up projects that go beyond the usual American and British series, which now brings us to the brand new and very intriguing Danish series, Copenhagen Cowboy. The series will be directed by Danish film director Nicolas Winding Refn, whose work you might be familiar with. For example, he has previously directed movies like Only God Forgives (2013) and Drive (2011). Nicolas has previously collaborated with stars like Ryan Gosling and Tom Hardy and is now presenting us with his brand new series, Copenhagen Cowboy. This series looks very different from anything we’ve seen before but it has been described as a noir thriller, which already sets it apart from the mainstream series.
Not a lot has been revealed about Copenhagen Cowboy just yet, but we do know that this series is an important part of Nicolas Winding Refn’s vision, who seems more than thrilled to have collaborated with Netflix on this project. Here’s everything you need to know about Copenhagen Cowboy ahead of its release, from the plot to the cast, and much more:

Thanks to Netflix, we do have an official synopsis for Copenhagen Cowboy that helps us understand what this series might be about, however, if you’re still a little confused about it, we don’t blame you! Nevertheless, the release of this series will help us understand the concept and Nicolas Winding Refn’s vision. Copenhagen Cowboy follows an enigmatic young woman named Miu, and as the synopsis reads, “after a lifetime of servitude and on the verge of a new beginning, she traverses the ominous landscape of Copenhagen’s criminal netherworld.” Since Copenhagen Cowboy is a noir thriller, we can expect plenty of it to revolve around the big Danish criminals of Copenhagen, and how Miu navigates through them. Miu is on the path of trying to seek justice when she encounters Rakel, her archenemy, who will be another strong female in this series.
Copenhagen Cowboy will be about Miu and her tale of justice and vengeance, and it will be interesting to see how one woman takes over the criminal netherworld of Copenhagen. It has been confirmed that there will be a total of six episodes in this series, with a run time of one hour for each episode. So far, there is no news on whether or not this is a limited series, which means that there could possibly be another season of Copenhagen Cowboy in the future and we continue seeing Miu’s journey.
Copenhagen Cowboy features some incredibly talented Danish actors and actresses who deserve the recognition which Netflix will hopefully provide them with. In the front and center, we have the character Miu, who will be played by Angela Bundalovic, this won’t be Bundalovic’s first Netflix series, as she has previously appeared in The Rain (2018) and Limboland (2020). She will present herself as the enigmatic, strong female lead, and we can’t wait to see what’s in store for her character. Next, we have Miu’s adversary, Rakel, portrayed by Lola Corfixen, who is also the daughter of the director, Nicolas Winding Refn. There will be several other actors and actresses who will be a part of Copenhagen Cowboy.
Joining the cast of Copenhagen Cowboy, we have Fleur Frilund, Andreas Lykke Jørgensen, Per Thiim Thim, Dragana Milutinovic, Mikael Bertelsen, Mads Brügger, Ramadan Huseini, Jason Hendil-Forssel and Li Ii Zhang. We are unsure at the moment of which characters these cast members will play, but we’re assuming a lot of them make up for the criminal underworld of Copenhagen. We are just as intrigued as you are, and can’t wait to find out more about their characters when the series releases.
Copenhagen Cowboy has been teased on social media since September 2021, and the director made a public post about the series sometime in December 2021. Originally, the series was hoping for a December 2022 release, but it will finally drop on your screens on the 5th of January, 2023! So you can start your new year with some brilliant noir thriller once you have finished your rom-com Christmas binge! Copenhagen Cowboy will exclusively be available to stream on Netflix, so make sure you renew your subscription for the next year!
The official trailer for Copenhagen Cowboy was released less than a week ago, and everyone is far too excited to see a noir thriller by Nicolas Winding Refn, whose previous work has been loved and appreciated all over the world. The trailer of Copenhagen Cowboy boasts some raw emotions and action sequences, which will make you realize that this series is truly going to be one of a kind. The trailer might leave you a little confused with everything that is happening, but maybe that’s the aim of it. If the trailer gives everything away, what’s the point of the series? Miu’s character is the star the of show, and stands out the most in the trailer, amongst everything else that is going on.
The trailer very briefly shows us a glimpse of a pig in a cage, and Copenhagen Cowboy has been in the media for all the wrong reasons because of controversy and a complaint filed by PETA. Allegedly, the production team of Copenhagen Cowboy killed a pig for the sole purpose of filming, and PETA has written a complaint to Netflix, and investigations regarding the same are currently underway. Nicolas Winding Refn is a controversial director who tends to provoke with his art. It will be interesting to see how this complaint unfolds and if that particular scene will be cut from the series.
Despite the controversy surrounding Copenhagen Cowboy, viewers are excited to watch the upcoming series which looks incredibly promising from the trailer and a sneak peek, released by Netflix Nordic about to two months ago. It isn’t long until the release of Copenhagen Cowboy, so do let us know your thoughts about the upcoming Danish series!
