Dog Gone is based on the book Dog Gone: A Lost Pet’s Extraordinary Journey and the Family Who Brought Him Home by Pauls Toutonghi. On October 10, 1998, Fielding Marshall was hiking on the Appalachian Trail with his dog, Gonker.
The six-year-old golden retriever suddenly darted into the woods, and Fielding could find no trace of him. As if losing his dog wasn’t terrifying enough, his dog also had Addison’s Disease – a rare, long-term endocrine disorder that typically prevents the body from producing enough cortisol. Without his hormone replacement medication, Gonker would die in about twenty-three days (changed to two weeks in the movie).
The Marshall family, consisting of Fielding and his parents, John and Virginia, began their hunt to find Gonker, reaching out to various news outlets in an attempt to get the word out about their missing best friend.
In the trailer, the family hears from people all over the world, sending them messages of support. Father and son embark on the hike of a lifetime to find Gonker, their once-in-a-lifetime miracle of a pet.
In joining together to find their beloved dog, John and Fielding find the time and space to heal their own strained relationship. Don’t forget your tissues when you get settled on the couch for this one!
Rob Lowe and Johnny Berchtold appear as the father and son duo, John and Fielding Marshall, alongside Kimberly Williams-Paisley as Virginia Marshall.
Rob Lowe is both an executive producer and star of Dog Gone. The Dayton, Ohio, native got his start in a production of Sherlock Holmes at the Wright State University Summer Theater.
After landing a series of supporting roles on television, his breakout role came when he was cast as Sodapop Curtis in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Outsiders in 1983. In 1985, he starred in the coming-of-age film St. Elmo’s Fire, opposite Emilio Estevez, Demi Moore, Judd Nelson, and more.
Amongst other projects, he starred on The West Wing as deputy White House Communications Director Sam Seaborn from 1999 through 2003. He was nominated for two Golden Globe Awards and a Primetime Emmy Award and won two Screen Actors Guild Awards during his time on the show.
Later on, in 2010, he became a series regular on the mockumentary sitcom Parks and Recreation as Chris Traeger, the city manager for the fictional town of Pawnee, Indiana. Lowe also has loaned his voice to animated projects, such as Disney’s television series, The Lion Guard, based on the 1994 film The Lion King.
Johnny Berchtold got his start as an internet personality, becoming popular for his posts on the now-defunct Vine, YouTube, and TikTok. He has created and starred in his own comedic sketches, as well as written and directed short films, mostly in the horror genre. The 28-year-old actor hails from Atlantic City, New Jersey, and studied filmmaking at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, then transferred to Columbia College Hollywood to study film acting and directing.
New York actress Kimberly Williams-Paisley made her feature film debut alongside Diane Keaton and comedian Steve Martin in the classic romantic comedy Father of the Bride and its sequel, Father of the Bride II. She is well-known for the role of Dana on the sitcom According to Jim, on which she appeared from 2001 through 2008.
She also appeared in the sports drama We Are Marshall in 2006 alongside Matthew McConaughey and future Marvel star Anthony Mackie. Prior to Dog Gone, she appeared in Netflix’s holiday films The Christmas Chronicles and The Christmas Chronicles 2 with Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell.
Production for Dog Gone began in Georgia in late August 2021, and filming began shortly thereafter on September 8th. Filming finally concluded on January 28th, 2022. Dog Gone will be available to stream exclusively on Netflix beginning Friday, January 13, 2023.
So, there’s less than a month before you get to watch this wholesome movie on your screen and it’s time to mark your calendars because we surely have! Is this the kind of movie that could have the potential for a sequel? We don’t know just yet, but if a sequel meant more cuteness, we’d surely sign up for that!
Netflix dropped the official trailer for Dog Gone on their YouTube channel on December 13, 2022. So far the trailer has received less than 129,000 views. Sure, by the number of views at the moment, especially when compared to other Netflix movies, Dog Gone seems like it might be going under the radar, but hopefully, it will pick up some pace during the holiday season and be ready to watch by the time it releases. Although the viewers who have commented so far had had largely positive thoughts.
Among the most popular are those saying, “I already know I’m gonna cry my eyes out to this one.” Lots of comments are praising Rob Lowe, one such fan calling him “the king of feel-good movies”.
We’ve said this before but 2023 is going to be a big year for movies, whether it is on streaming platforms or theatrical releases. Since the pandemic has ended, all directors and production houses have picked up the pace and are making up for the lost time, which has obviously worked well in our favor!
Dog Gone will be a wholesome addition to the list of movies that will be released in 2023. Do let us know in the comments just how excited you are about the upcoming movie.
