On June 28th-30th 2016 The OPEN Media Hub is organising parallel Master Classes for broadcast, print and online media in Georgia. The Master Classes are specially designed for managers and senior editors of television, print and online media outlets and are intended to help them develop advanced management skills and to include their media organisations in the package of activities and services provided by the Media Hub over the next years.

MASTER CLASS PRINT AND ONLINE MEDIA MANAGEMENT:

Innovative Strategies in Print and Online Media Development

Highlights

The three-day Master Class will have a special focus on media development in the age of social and online media and will cover the following areas of media expertise:

  • business planning;
  • new revenue sources;
  • costs management;
  • paid content and pricing strategies;
  • educational projects;
  • content marketing managing multi-platform content;
  • newsroom workflow management including integrated newsrooms;

Content

The Master Class will include sessions on:

  • Economic sustainability and media freedom;
  • Developing multimedia families (print, online, audio, video) under one brand;
  • Reconciling business objectives and public service: Educational projects in commercial media as a new source of revenue and audience growth;
  • Auxiliary Revenues: Supplements, Specials, Events, Books, Newsletters, Client Publishing;
  • Innovative online strategies: video, podcasts, newsletters, data journalism;
  • Integrated newsroom: main models, structure, workflow, management;
  • Effectivity and cost management: How to cut costs without compromising editorial quality

The three-day Master Class will have a special focus on Challenges in Raising Regional Issues in a Global Story and will cover the following areas of media expertise:

  • news management techniques developing practical tools
  • how to use storytelling to report stories covering regional issues
  • managing multi-platform content
  • newsroom workflow management
  • including integrated newsrooms
  • handling social media and user-generated content and how EU sources can be accessed efficiently for the newsroom cycle

Content

The Master Classes will have a special focus on:
Topical issues, such as the upcoming elections and the support provided by the EU for reforms and development in Georgia and Georgia’s unique position in the region

MEET THE TRAINERS

veselinVeselin Vačkov, Print And Onlime Media Management TrainerVeselin Vačkov is a well-known Czech journalist and media executive. Currently, he is the director of the oldest and most prestigious Czech daily newspaper Lidové noviny. Previously, between 2000 and 2009, he served as the paper’s editor-in-chief. Between 2009 and 2013, he was the regional director of the MAFRA Media Group. He has been member of the Supervisory board of the Czech Publishers’ Association since 2008. Veselin holds a degree in English, Czech and Slavic Studies from Charles University in Prague. He has also completed a Ph.D. degree there. He is an alumnus of Jesus College, University of Oxford, where he studied computational linguistics. He started his journalistic career as business reporter and foreign correspondent. As editor-in-chief he oversaw the thorough modernization of Lidové noviny ant its news site Lidovky.cz and their transformation into an integrated multimedia operation. Veselin lives in Prague. He is a seasoned long-distance runner.

robertRobert Parsons, Broadcast Management TrainerRobert Parsons is the Chief Foreign editor at France 24 English. He joined the channel as an international affairs editor for the launch in 2006. In 2010 he moved to Georgia for 20 months to set up PIK TV, a 24-hour TV and internet news channel broadcasting in Russian throughout the Russian-speaking world. Robert worked 18 years for the BBC, including nine years as Moscow correspondent (TV and radio) from 1993 to 2002. As a reporter, Robert was sent to many countries (Iraq, Ukraine, Israel,…). He joined Radio Free Europe as director of the Georgian Service in 2003. He speaks English, Russian, Georgian and French.
