Title: An Unemployed Greek Family Opened their Home to a Family of Refugees
Short summary:
This article presents in a detailed way a unique story of solidarity in Greece, in a period of economic crisis and a refugee crisis. It deals with a family of unemployed Greeks and how they managed to offer hospitality for a year, at their house, to a family of refugees. Stamatis, Katerina and their two sons are a typical working class family in Greece, with both parents becoming unemployed during the economic crisis. When the so-called “Balkan Corridor” was closed, many refugees got stranded in Greece and stayed in the Port of Piraeus in squalid conditions, facing the cold and the rain. It was there that Stamatis and Katerina encountered one day Aua and her daughter Maris who was very ill. They took them in their house to protect them and they spent a year with them offering them shelter, food, help to have their papers ready and lots of love. This article tells the story of Stamatis and Katerina, the story of Aua who is a woman-refugee from Gambia that has been the victim of clitoridectomy and left in order to make sure that her daughter does not go through the same ordeal, and the bond of tenderness that the two families developed through their living together. Their effort is of particular importance because it showed that solidarity can survive even in the most adverse conditions and offer the best example against racism and xenophobia.
