The European Union Delegation in Azerbaijan held a cleanup campaign on the Novkhani beach of Baku together with the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and local NGOs today – the 15th of September, on the occasion of World Cleanup Day.
Over 200 people, including the head of the EU delegation to Azerbaijan Kestutis Yankauskas, UK Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Carol Krofts, representatives of other diplomatic corps, MENR, journalists, civil society activists and volunteers attended in the beach cleanup event.
Head of the EU Delegation to Azerbaijan, Kestutis Yankauskas, spoke to Eurasia Daily.
He mentioned that the main purpose of the action was to draw public attention to the protection of the environment and to inform people about these issues.
British Ambassador to Azerbaijan Carol Kroft highlighted the importance of such events. According to him, indifference to the environment is indifference to the future generations, and each of us must realize that by contaminating the environment, we are handing bad future to our off-springs.
According to the statistics on the official website of the MENR, Azerbaijan comes in the 4th place among the CIS countries for the quantity of contaminants.
It should be noted that the European Union closely cooperates with Azerbaijan in improving environmental protection policies, investing in this area, as well as citizens’ health, sustainable development, and strengthening ecosystem.
