What Is the Plot of His Dark Materials Season 3?
His Dark Materials is a fantasy drama television series, adapted from Philip Pullman’s trilogy of novels of the same name. Season 1 followed the first novel, The Golden Compass, and Season 2 was based on the second novel, The Subtle Knife. Therefore, Season 3 is most certainly based on the third novel, The Amber Spyglass.
To recap a little before we dive into the plot of His Dark Material Season 3, the series so far tells the story of Lyra Belacqua, sometimes known as Lyra Silvertongue, an orphan living with scholars at Jordan College, Oxford. She travels to a parallel world where humans’ souls exist outside of their bodies in an animal form called daemons, and her alternate world is governed by a power called the Magisterium. She discovers that she is the subject of a witches’ prophecy which claims she will change the world. She also uncovers a series of kidnappings in London and a mysterious substance called Dust, which ultimately leads her to other worlds. The prophecy about her life also links her to Will, a teenage boy from our world who is in search of his missing father.
In His Dark Materials Season 3, we know that there will be new characters, including two angels named Balthamos and Baruch who are integral to Lyra’s story. Previously absent characters will return, such as Lord Asriel, who will battle the Authority, a god-like figure, and aeronaut Lee Scoresby, who was killed by the Magisterium in Season 2, is going to be seen in the Land of the Dead.
In The Amber Spyglass, the Magisterium is hunting Lyra in an attempt to prevent the fall of man, since the witches’ prophecy named Lyra as the second Eve. As the second Eve, Lyra will be responsible for change on a cosmic level. The aforementioned angels Balthamos and Baruch try to persuade Will to join Lord Asriel’s army in the fight against the Magisterium, as well. Lyra and Will also confess their love for each other, but circumstances might just prevent them from being able to exist in the same world together. Lyra will also travel to the Land of the Dead and attempt to bring someone back to life.
The Cast of His Dark Materials Season 3
Many members of the main cast have been confirmed to return in Season 3. British-Spanish actress Dafne Keen will, of course, return as Lyra. Born in Madrid, she is the daughter of Spanish actress and writer María Fernández Ache and British actor Will Keen. In 2017, she portrayed Laura, the mutant child clone of Wolverine, in Marvel’s Wolverine. Next up, she has been cast in the new Star Wars series, The Acolyte.
Scottish actor James McAvoy will return as Lord Asriel after not being seen much in Season 2 because of filming restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic. American actor, songwriter, and playwright Lin-Manuel Miranda of Hamilton: The Musical fame will appear once again as Lee Scoresby, and Amir Wilson will reprise his role as Will Parry.
Additionally, the following cast members have been confirmed to appear in His Dark Materials Season 3:
