While everyone is excited about all the holiday movies and shows that will be streaming on their screens this winter season, there is something in store for when you need a break from all the meet-cutes. Hot Skull, created by Mert Baykal, is a TV mini-series that is based in a dystopian world. After COVID-19 gave everyone a reality check, funnily enough, people started scouring the internet for shows based on a similar theme. The entire “end of the world” concept is huge these days, mostly because people are constantly living in anticipation of what plague might haunt the world next, and Hot Skull gives us a scary possibility.
Hot Skull is based on a novel written by Afşin Kum, with the same title. We know how everyone feels about book-to-TV adaptations, but so far, Hot Skull looks incredibly promising, which is why we’re here to tell you more about it. So, here’s everything you need to know about Hot Skull, from the plot to the cast, and much more:

This looks EXACTLY the type of show I love 😍🤓 Sci-fi, Istanbul.. What else would you need 🙏 #Netflix #2023 #Scifi #Turkiye #HotSkull
What Is The Plot of Hot Skull Netflix?
As mentioned before, Hot Skull is set in a dystopian world that has been affected by a plague. Now you might be wondering how Hot Skull is different from the other movies or shows that have dabbled in a similar concept because they surely have. Hot Skull sets itself apart from the others by one unique aspect, which is the means of transmission of this particular disease that has haunted the world. The plague is transmitted by mere communication of language and speech. Not by touch, or exchange of fluids, but a simple exchange of words can cause this plague to spread and infect people. Hot Skull focuses particularly on one person, Murat Siyavus, a former linguist who has managed to be one of the few people not infected by the plague. He decides to seek shelter at his mother’s home, who advises him to “live a little.”
Does Murat go on to live a little? We sure hope so, because, by the looks of it, he is the key to possibly ending this plague and saving many lives. How this will happen will only be implored as the series progresses and we learn more about it. Those who aren’t affected by the plague, move around the city using headphones (at least they don’t have to wear masks this time around). Murat eventually puts a little kid’s need ahead of his own, which leads him to realize that he might be immune to this plague. Now, Murat and those who are in a similar boat as him must try and navigate this immunity to try and help the rest of the world.
The Cast of Hot Skull Netflix
While there will be several supporting characters throughout the series, Hot Skull, the lead character, Murat, will be played by the 43-year-old Turkish actor Osman Sonant. Sonant has previously appeared in several Turkish movies and tv shows like Leyla and Mecnun, Zengin ve Yoksul, and Beş Kardeş. So far, his characterization of Murat seems to be the show stealer as we watch him navigate through Istanbul during the plague. Other than Sonant, the other cast members who will be aiding the plot and episodes are also well-known Turkish actors and actresses:
- Hazal Subaşı
- Şevket Çoruh
- Özgür Emre Yıldırım
- Gonca Vuslateri
- Kubilay Tuncer
- Tilbe Saran
- Zerrin Sümer
Since Hot Skull revolves around a plague in Istanbul, there will surely be several other supporting cast members, with small roles, or even guest appearances. While the cast of Hot Skull isn’t known worldwide just yet, we hope that changes after the release of this mini-series.
When and Where Can You Watch Hot Skull?
People often complain that Netflix doesn’t take enough chances on international movies and tv shows, but things are different this time around. Hot Skull, the Turkish mini-series will be available to stream exclusively on Netflix. Hot Skull might not be in line with the holiday theme, but it is releasing during the holiday season! The mini-series will officially premiere on the 2nd of December, so take your Christmas hats off before you begin the binge! There will be a total of eight episodes. As of now, there is no information on whether this is a limited series or whether there will be another season, it’s too soon to tell, but if we do find more information, you will be the first to know!
Is There a Trailer for Hot Skull?
Netflix released the official trailer for Hot Skull about two weeks ago, giving us a good idea of what to expect from the eight episodes without spoiling too much. While watching the trailer, focus on the subtitles and how the clarity breaks at certain points, signaling how the plague is transmitted, which seems like a very creative choice! There’s a lot going on in the official trailer for Hot Skull, there’s chaos, there are high stakes, and one is constantly wondering about the fate of the world.
Conclusion
We are more than thrilled that Netflix has taken a chance on this book-to-tv adaptation and is bringing us this dystopian series, Hot Skull. While you watch the series, do keep looking out for hints pertaining to the title of the series, which might just have some clues in it. There aren’t enough Turkish shows or movies on Netflix yet, so we are thrilled that they are becoming more mainstream, and hopefully, a good response will only increase the production of future shows and movies from all around the world.
