You might recognize Jason Momoa as either Aquaman, Khal Drogo, or just generally as one of the bigger actors in Hollywood, and yes, we do mean both in physicality and talent. These two roles in themselves show the versatility of Jason Momoa, and how he is capable of playing any character in any genre beyond fantasy and superhero too. He has gained more popularity in recent years, and with his new movie Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom on the way, we figured it was time to tell you more about him.
Jason Momoa has a lot more going on for him than the upcoming Aquaman movie this year, but we will discuss more about that later in the article. So, keep reading to find out everything you need to know about Jason Momoa, from his net worth to his biography to his dating history and much more:
Jason Momoa’s net worth is estimated to be $25 million in 2023. It seems a large part of this comes from his contact with DC for the role of Aquaman. It is believed that he was paid around $7 million for the first film, and he negotiated a massive raise for the second film, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, taking home $15 million before the movie has even hit the big screen. Although the majority of his earnings are from the DC franchise, where we will possibly continue appearing for years to come, Jason Momoa is becoming increasingly popular amongst viewers after playing the roles of Aquaman and Khal Drogo.
Joseph Jason Namakaeha Momoa was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, on August 1, 1979. His parents divorced not long after he was born, and he and his mother moved to Norwalk, Iowa. He was a member of the soccer team while attending Norwalk High School, and upon graduation, he enrolled at the University of Hawaii.
His acting career began rather quickly. He auditioned for the television series Baywatch Hawaii when he was 19 years old and living and working in Honolulu. He portrayed Jason Ioane from 1999 through 2001 and reprised the role in the 2003 made-for-television film Baywatch: Hawaiian Wedding, as well.
From 2005 through 2009 Momoa appeared as Ronon Dex on the TV series Stargate: Atlantis. Momoa was required to cover up his tattoos for the role, including the large tribal piece on his left arm until the writers of the show finally added a scene where Ronon got a tattoo. After his time on Stargate: Atlantis, Momoa appeared in several episodes of The Game and starred in the 2011 remake of the 1982 film Conan the Barbarian, originally starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Momoa was able to keep some of his tattoos on display when he booked the role of Khal Drogo, the leader of the Dothraki tribal nation, on HBO’s Game of Thrones. For his audition, Momoa tapped into his Polynesian roots and performed a Haka, a traditional dance of the Māori people which can convey several messages, including challenges to opponents.
In 2014, Momoa starred in Road to Paloma, which he also directed and co-wrote with Robert Homer Mollohan and Jonathan Hirschbein. The film also starred his then-wife, Lisa Bonet, and premiered at the Sarasota Film Festival. In the same year, Momoa appeared in the dark comedy film Sugar Mountain and the SundanceTV drama series The Red Road. After auditioning for the role of Bruce Wayne, or Batman, Momoa was cast in the role of Arthur Curry or Aquaman. He also voiced Aquaman in The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part. Momoa starred in The Bad Batch in 2016, which was selected to compete for the Golden Lion at the 73rd Venice International Film Festival and won the Special Jury Prize.
Momoa starred in and executive produced all three seasons of Frontier, a Canadian historical drama television series, between 2016 and 2018. Most recently, Momoa was seen in the 2021 film Dune and the Apple TV+ series See. He also is slated to portray the villain in the tenth film in the Fast & Furious franchise, titled Fast X, which is expected to be released in 2023. So, by the looks of it, 2023 will be a good year for Jason Momoa with his appearance in two big franchises.
While filming Baywatch, Momoa met Australian actress Simmone Jade Mackinnon, who eventually would become his first wife. They were together for six years before becoming engaged in 2004. However, they called off their engagement in 2005 when Momoa began to see actress Lisa Bonet, who was actually Momoa’s childhood crush. Bonet and Momoa did not marry until 2017. They separated in January 2022. As recently as the summer of 2022, Momoa has been spotted with Mexican actress and singer Eiza González, but neither of them has confirmed their relationship status.
Momoa is a fan of heavy metal music and, in his spare time, he practices Brazilian jiu-jitsu. He has been training in martial arts, in general, since around 2005. As previously mentioned, he has a number of tattoos. One of them is a half sleeve on his left forearm, a tribal design of his aumakua, or family god. Momoa also protested against the building of the Thirty Meter Telescope on Mauna Kea, as it is a sacred site for native Hawaiians.
Jason Momoa is the only child of Coni and Joseph Momoa. His father is a painter of Native Hawaiian ancestry, and his mother is German, Irish, and a Pawnee photographer. They divorced shortly after Momoa’s birth.
Momoa shares two children with his second wife, actress Lisa Bonet. They have a daughter, Lola Iolani, born in July 2007, and a son, Nakoa-Wolf, born in December 2008. Momoa is also technically the stepfather of actress Zoë Kravitz through this marriage.
