Johnny Depp is undoubtedly one of the most well-known actors of the last 30 years. Starring in over 50 films, he is popular with children and adults for roles in everything from period dramas to children’s musicals. He has been around for a while and, more recently, was part of a considerable controversy and public trial, which we will talk about later in the article.
Until then, please continue reading to learn everything you need to know about Johnny Depp, from his net worth to his early work, movies, and everything this talented actor has done so far over nearly four decades!
Having starred in everything from box office hits to cologne campaigns, one would expect Johnny Depp’s net worth to be quite sizeable. With a career spanning nearly 40 years, he is rumored to make an average of $20 million per film.
However, recent legal battles and years of lavish spending have diminished Depp’s net worth to approximately $150 million. Not bad at all, but not what we expected from someone with such a lengthy and prolific career, having earned $40 million from each of the Pirates of the Caribbean films alone.
John Christopher Depp II was born in Owensboro, Kentucky, on June 9, 1963. His family frequently moved when he was a child, but they settled in Miramar, Florida, in 1970. He began playing in various bands after his mother gave him a guitar when he was 12 years old, and he dropped out of Miramar High School in 1979 to pursue a career as a rock musician. He continued playing with several bands and found some success with the band Rock City Angels, releasing their debut album Young Man’s Blues, in 1986 under Geffen Records.
His first wife, makeup artist Lori Ann Allison, introduced him to actor Nicolas Cage, who got him an audition for Wes Craven’s 1984 film A Nightmare on Elm Street. In the movie, he portrayed the main character’s boyfriend, one of the victims of slasher Freddy Krueger. His breakout role came in the 1987 television series 21 Jump Street, in which he starred as Officer Thomas “Tom” Hanson for four out of five seasons.
He began his long-term working relationship with director Tim Burton when he starred in the 1990s Edward Scissorhands opposite Winona Ryder and Dianne West. This role earned him his first Golden Globe nomination, as well. He earned a second Golden Globe nomination for his role in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape? in 1993.
Throughout the 1990s, Depp starred in several hit films and acted alongside Hollywood legends Marlon Brando in Don Juan DeMarco and Al Pacino in Donnie Brasco. Depp appeared or starred in several critically-acclaimed films throughout the early 2000s, including Tim Burton’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, The Man Who Cried, Before Night Falls, and Chocolat.
In 2003, he starred as Captain Jack Sparrow in Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, the first in the long-running franchise. He received nominations for an Academy Award, Golden Globe, and BAFTA Award, and he won an MTV Movie Award and the Screen Actor’s Guild Award for Best Actor.
Depp starred in several Tim Burton films in the 2000s and 2010s, including Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Corpse Bride, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Alice in Wonderland, Dark Shadows, and Alice Through the Looking Glass. He also appeared as The Wolf in the film adaptation of the Stephen Sondheim musical Into the Woods and the 2017 Agatha Christie adaptation of Murder on the Orient Express.
Depp was cast as Gellert Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. Following accusations of domestic abuse by ex-wife Amber Heard, Depp resigned from the role of Grindelwald at the request of the Fantastic Beasts franchise’s production company, Warner Bros.
As of May 2022, Depp has been cast as King Louis XV in French actor-director Maïwenn’s period film La Favorite, which will tell the story of Madame du Barry, a seamstress who rises through the ranks of Louis XV’s court to become his mistress. Netflix will co-finance and stream the French period drama. Depp is also set to direct Modigliani, a film about painter and sculptor Amedeo Modigliani, which he will co-produce alongside Al Pacino and Barry Navidi.
Johnny Depp married makeup artist Lori Anne Allison from 1983 until 1985. He then was engaged to actress Sherilyn Fenn and Jennifer Grey in the late 1980s before proposing to actress Winona Ryder in 1990.
He got a tattoo for his Edward Scissorhands co-star that read “Winona Forever,” but he changed it to “Wino Forever” after they went their separate ways. He dated English model Kate Moss between 1994 and 1998.
While filming the neo-noir horror film The Ninth Gate, he met French singer and actress Vanessa Paradis. The two were together from 1998 until 2012. They have two children, model and actress Lily-Rose Depp and John “Jack” Christopher Depp III. Depp and Paradis remain good friends.
After separating from Vanessa Paradis, Depp began dating actress Amber Heard, his co-star from 2011’s The Rum Diary. They were married in 2015, and about a year later, Heard filed for divorce and obtained a temporary restraining order against Depp, alleging verbal and physical abuse.
He denied her claims, but they settled in August 2016 and finalized their divorce in January 2017. Heard pledged to donate the $7 million from their settlement to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).
In February 2019, Depp sued Heard for defamation over an op-ed she wrote, published by The Washington Post in December 2018. Heard countersued in August 2020, and the trial occurred between April and June 2022. The jury awarded $15 million in damages to Depp and $2 million in damages to Heard.
