After the heart-breaking seasons of Made in Abyss, fans are eagerly waiting for Made in Abyss Season 3. We already had our big shoes filled with heart-shattering sequel films, seasons 1 & 2. From watching Riko getting back from death’s door and Mitty’s devastating story to Prushka’s death everything has left a scar on us that will never fade over time.
If we look at the anime released in 2017-2021, so far this one had the best original story and is not derived from other plots. We rejoiced when Riko and Reg won and cried when the characters died.
The emotional bonding that was created between characters and viewers has become unbreakable, and the fan base will remain strong for the next five years.
Akihito Tsukushi Japanese manga series was serialized in Takeshobo’s digital publication Web Comic Gamma in October 2012. As of December 2022 eleven Tankobon volumes have been collected so far.
The anime adaptation Made in Abyss season 1 by Kinema Citrus aired from July to September 2017. The sequel film titled Dawn of the Deep Soul premiered in January 2020, and the second season titled Made in Abyss: The Golden City of Scorching Sun aired from July to September 2022.
The great news is that the franchise had finally announced a sequel for the second season of Made in Abyss which will cover the chapters that are left and is expected to release by end of 2023. We are expecting the sequel to be short because there are not many chapters as of now.
Looking at the sources Made in Abyss Season 3 will take at least 3 or 4 years because the manga is ongoing and there are not enough source materials yet for season 3. Plus, the manga had not undergone hiatus which means there is a good possibility of Made in Abyss Season 3.
The plot is based on an orphaned girl named Riko who lives in Belchero Orphanage in the town of Orth which is situated on the outskirts of the abyss. The whole town surrounds a giant hole whose depths are still unknown to the world, and the people call it Abyss.
The Abyss is said to have magical artifacts. The cave raiders undergo a perilous journey and face savage creatures in the abyss to discover relics and bring them back to town. They also need to overcome the “Curse of the Abyss” which is a fatal malady that infests anyone who starts ascending from the depths of the abyss.
The deeper a person goes the deadlier the curse gets. Few who descended to the lowermost depths shared their experiences through letters in hot air like balloons. The legendary cave raiders who return to tell the tale are called White Whistles.
Riko’s mother (who is presumed dead) is also a white whistle after she took the “last descent” into the abyss. Riko aims to follow in her mother’s footsteps and aspires to become a white whistle.
One day while raiding the cave she stumbles upon a half-human/half-robot boy in the first layer of Abyss. She names him Reg after her dog. Riko and Reg after learning more about Riko’s mother through the letters determine to descend into the abyss without completing her training with Reg.
They sneak out of the academy and descend into the abyss in search of Riko’s mother. Riko determines to find her mother and embarks on a treacherous journey.
The first 11 episodes of Made in Abyss Season 1 were 25 minutes duration while the finale ended with an episode duration of 47 minutes.
The sequel film of Made in Abyss did not have the exploratory vibe of season 1 but it was indeed an unexpected fantastic sequel we could ask for. Season 2 revealed more about the abyss and hollows and focused on selected characters.
In the second season, we see Riko and her friends exploring Abyss’s sixth layer (Capital of Unreturned) after somehow defeating the Bondrewd. Riko finds the ruins of the promised golden city where she sees a strange society of bizarre-looking creatures called hollows.
If you remember hollows are humans who turn into creatures (based on desires) when they stay too long in the depths of the abyss. Riko meets hollows who welcome them and interacts with them in a friendly manner. But Reg and Riko soon find themselves in trouble as they find out the secrets of society.
They uncover the mysteries of the village, and Faputa’s story gets revealed. The bloodshed, fight, and destruction do set back viewers and create an air of melancholy. The episode ending with Faputa crying after seeing her mother was heart-wrenching and painful indeed. But in the end, there’s also a new beginning as Reg and Riko encourage her to join them on their journey.
We expect Made in Abyss Season 3 will follow their journey ahead and may cover the chapters that were left to be covered.
All of the seasons of Made in Abyss exceeded our expectations, and we know that the new sequel will be as exciting and suspenseful as the previous ones so prepare yourself with a box of tissues to shed tears again as they meet more creatures with horrifying stories.
No announcement related to the cast has been revealed yet but we are hoping for the following Japanese Staff and Cast to return for Made in Abyss Season 2 Sequel and Season 3 as well.

Made in Abyss is indeed the most gruesome and mind-numbing tale so far. We have always been at the edge of our seats since episode one. There’s no end to horrors and mystery in each episode. We want the Made in Abyss Season 2 Sequel to release soon. Made in Abyss Season 3 will be released after two or three years minimum as it needs source materials for adaptation.
