The upcoming season of the well-liked crime thriller series Mindhunter Season 3, which debuted on Netflix in 2017, is eagerly awaited. The series focuses on FBI agents Holden Ford and Bill Tench as they look into and speak with some of history’s most infamous serial killers.
They do that to make themselves easier to recognise and capture. Even though the first two seasons of the show received favourable reviews and a devoted following, the show’s future has been up in the air. The series was initially put on hold in 2020 by the show’s creator, David Fincher.
He had promised to revisit the series in the future but was too busy. What’s the most recent information regarding Mindhunter season 3 in 2023? Has the show been cancelled entirely or has it been renewed? When will it return to our screens? See below for the most recent news.
Unfortunately, we have some bad news for Mindhunter enthusiasts. It appears that the eagerly anticipated season 3 may not be coming. However, the show has a devoted following and positive critical reception and numerous rumours point to a potential revival. However, it appears that the show won’t be coming back after all.
During an interview with the French publication Le Journal du Dimanche in February 2023, David Fincher was directly questioned about the potential for a third season. Fans would be disappointed by his response.
The first two seasons, he claimed, are especially worthy of praise, but the show is also highly expensive. Additionally, in Netflix’s opinion, they haven’t drawn in a sizable enough audience to warrant such a commitment.
He doesn’t blame them, though, because they took chances to start the series. That’s possible because people still yearn for more after the first two seasons, which were so excellent.
David Fincher confirmed in October 2020 that Netflix would not be producing Mindhunter season 3. In the same source, it was hinted that we would get the much-awaited season in five years.
The little bit gave the fans hope. Then, in 2021, there was a report claiming Fincher was in discussions with Netflix once more regarding a third season. While this news is undoubtedly disappointing for fans, we can find comfort in the fact that there are still two suspenseful seasons left for us to revisit and rewatch as often as we like.
The future? Perhaps in the future, Mindhunter’s return will be unexpectedly announced.
Director of Season 2 Andrew Dominick has revealed what would have been covered in Mindhunter Season 3 if it had been produced. Dominick explained in an interview what they planned to do during Season 3.
Therefore, one of them was going to have a relationship with Michael Mann and the other was going to have a relationship with Jonathan Demme.
It was also supposed to be about how profiling entered the zeitgeist and the public consciousness. Everyone had been eagerly anticipating that season when they finally emerged from the cellar and went to work.
Additionally, both of the first two seasons’ main storylines revolved around the BTK killer. Consequently, we assume that it would be picked up should the series ever return.
If Mindhunter is renewed for a third season, the following actors might make appearances. While Fincher works on other projects, the contracts for Mindhunter’s three lead actors have been terminated.
Holt McCallany portrays Bill Tench, Jonathan Groff plays Holden Ford, and Anna Torv plays Wendy Carr.
Likely, he could still reassemble his core cast if he were to return to Mindhunter in the future. He would, however, have to accommodate their schedules and any new acting obligations they could have made. Stacey Roca, who plays Nancy Tench, the wife of Bill, is another possible returnee. For season two, Roca was also elevated to series regular.
As Greg Smith and Ted Gunn, the new director of the Behavioural Science Unit, respectively, Joe Tuttle and Michael Cerveris may reprise their roles. Also, we’re crossing our fingers for more of the infamously terrifying serial killers from the show.
Ed Kemper, Montie Rissell, and Jerry Brudos were among them before. We also think we would have seen more if Sonny Valicenti had been identified as Dennis Rader, a.k.a. the BTK serial killer, instead of an ADT serviceman.
It doesn’t appear that Mindhunter season 3 production will start anytime soon. It took eight months to film the second season. We would therefore be years away from seeing fresh episodes, if at all if season three were to cover a similar amount of time.
This certainly won’t be the last time we hear anything about a third season. However, in the interim, let’s appreciate the wonderful characters and storylines that we’ve grown to know and love. Seasons 1 and 2 of Mindhunter are currently accessible on Netflix.
