The last episode was spooky and grim to the core, which ended on a sad note, but hey; before commenting on the episode’s ending let’s first get a recap of the beginning of the Nier: Automata Ver1.1a episode 4. Episode 4 started with machine lifeforms performing a play showcasing human-like behaviors, as the story progresses we see Jackass and others discussing making peace with machine lifeforms instead of extending the wars for years.
Further, we see that the backup for which 9S and 2B asked for got denied, and they were ordered to investigate a location sent by the commander of the YoRha Project. As they reached the place, they discover an ancient theme park run by machine lifeforms. They soon face a gigantic robot adorned with ornaments named Songstress; who goes wild and keeps attacking them.
9S and 2B somehow manage to finish her and the episode ends with 9S slaughtering innocent machine lifeforms. We hope this recap would help you understand the next episode but, if you want a detailed review then, do check the review shared below.
The episode starts with Eve and Adam (androids) discussing humans. Eve asks why he needs to wear anything at all, to which Adam replies that it’s because humans cover their private parts. Eve again questions Adam for making him eat an apple, Adam says that it increases intelligence so he must eat it.
This scene shows us that androids are trying to imitate humans and try to become like them. Although there’s still a lot of mystery; the scene is like setting the stage for the upcoming finale.
We see 9S and 2B running an errand for the Resistance group to forge a strong partnership between them. As they move towards the location, they see a huge building in ruins, which had all sorts of stuff like brushes, plates, etc which is unknown to 9S and 2B.
The pods inform them that the place was a shopping mall before; where goods were sold, and humans used to visit the place often. Upon listening to the pods 9S says that once the war is over he would go shopping with 2B and buy T-shirts. This particular scene is gloomy but the optimism of 9S keeps the mood up.
9S and 2B are welcomed with white flags by the machine lifeforms under the leadership of Pascal the robot. 9S and 2B were told by the Resistance group already that the machine lifeforms are harmless and that they are quite friendly. Pascal introduces himself and asks them to feel free to roam around.
9S and 2B move around the village and realize that the machine lifeforms are harmless and have established a human-like community as well. The machine life forms are seen playing and working just like humans do, the peaceful life portrayed in this episode shares a glimpse of the life of villagers who spend their lives in leisure.
While investigating places 9S and 2B come across a huge robot trapped inside a tree. 9S tries to hack into the signals and sees memories of the robot, where we get to see how humans lived before the aliens invaded the earth. As 9S and 2B discuss the robot; Pascal enters and tells them the story behind forming the community.
Pascal was once a combat robot who got dumped in the ruins where the community got formed in the present day, there he came across the robot trapped in a tree and started feeling “emotions”.
As time went by, he decided to stop fighting and began inviting people who wanted to leave war and live in peace. Hence, the community was formed. Pascal’s story somehow satirically shows us our real life where we see people waging wars and then some want to live in peace and that this keeps going as peace is just an abstract word yet to be achieved.
As 9S and 2B return; Pascal is seen tending to the child-like machine lifeforms, the children fall out because one of them does not want to share the music box that he found. The child whines and complaints about people calling him an outcast.
If one looks at this scene from a psychological point of view then it unveils the human nature suffering from a social anxiety disorder. The episode ends with 2B archiving the location and the memory, so that when the war is over 9S and 2B can come back to the place to buy T-shirts.
Unlike the previous episodes, this episode gave us mixed feelings about the future of the machine lifeforms and the androids. Let’s hope the anime does not end with a tragedy, but we can expect some melodramatic episodes in the future. Nier: Automata Ver1.1a is available on HIDIVE/Hulu.
