Dinna fash, lads! Rather, don’t worry, Outlander fans! Season 7 of our favorite historical fantasy drama is coming sooner than we thought, and we can’t wait to tell you all about it. Very rarely do drama series these days go beyond 4 or 5 seasons, but given the massive success that Outlander has witnessed, it is no shocker that the viewers will bare witness to Outlander Season 7 in 2023. There are several things about Outlander that have piqued everyone’s interest over the last few years, and it is no wonder that time and again, the show keeps getting renewed.
Without delaying it any further, we have compiled everything we know about it so far. Please be warned: This article contains spoilers for previous seasons of Outlander, so if you haven’t watched them yet, we highly recommend that you do. What Is The Plot of Outlander Season 7?
As you may know, Outlander, the television series, is adapted from American author Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander novel series. The first novel in the historical fantasy series was published in 1991 as Outlander in the United States and as Cross Stitch in the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand. Outlander is the story of a World War II nurse, Claire Beauchamp, who visits Inverness, Scotland on a second honeymoon with her husband, Frank Randall. Having spent so much time apart during the last few years, the couple hopes to reconnect while Frank also researches his family history in the area. One day, Claire goes out exploring and stumbles upon a stone circle called Craigh na Dun. After hearing a buzzing noise, she touches one of the stones, and the rest is history… literally. She finds herself transported back to Scotland, in 1743, and is accused of being an English spy by the Highlanders. They call her Sassenach, or “outlander,” considering her an outsider ignorant of their customs and culture. As luck would have it, she finds herself under the scrutiny of British army officer Jonathan “Black Jack” Randall, the very ancestor whom her husband is researching. After proving herself trustworthy by tending to the wounds of some members of Clan MacKenzie, she is offered protection in the form of marriage to Jamie Fraser, a younger member of Clan MacKenzie. While still attempting to make her way back to 1946, Claire and Jamie do fall in love, and the series follows the many trials and tribulations they face in the years to come, including a period when Claire does make it back to her husband. Sounds complicated? That’s because it is. But we promise it’s well worth the watch!
The majority of Outlander Season 7 likely will correspond with the seventh novel, An Echo in the Bone, originally published in September 2009. Season 6 largely was based on the sixth book: A Breath of Snow and Ashes. For those who didn’t know, the Frasers are living in North Carolina, North America, and working on overcoming the traumatic events they experience in Season 5. The Christie Family moves onto the land at Fraser’s Ridge, but as the patriarch of that family becomes more and more suspicious of Claire and her medical abilities, he keeps a closer eye on her. When his daughter, Malva, accuses Jamie of being the father of her unborn child and then is found dead, Claire finds herself arrested for her murder. The summary for An Echo in the Bone also says that the Frasers’ daughter Brianna and her husband Roger return to Lallybroch, the Fraser family home in Scotland. Claire and Jamie also may return to Scotland and be forced to confront Laoghaire, Jamie’s ex-wife.
The Cast of Outlander Season 7
The two most obvious cast members to return are Caitríona Balfe as Claire and Sam Heughan as Jamie, who also has served as producer of the series since 2019. Richard Rankin will return as Roger MacKenzie, Sophie Skelton as Brianna Randell Fraser, David Berry as Lord John Grey, John Bell as Ian Fraser Murray, Lauren Lyle as Marsali MacKimmie Fraser, and César Domboy as Fergus Claudel Fraser. Former cast members confirmed to appear in the new season are Graham MacTavish as Dougal MacKenzie, Lotte Verbeek as Geillis Duncan, Nell Hudson as Laoghaire MacKenzie, and Steven Cree as Ian Murray.
Irish actress Caitríona Balfe is also a producer and former model. She studied drama at the Dublin Institute of Technology before being scouted as a model. Her professional acting career began in 2006 with a background role as an employee at the fictional Runway magazine in The Devil Wears Prada. She has portrayed Claire Beauchamp Randall Fraser on Outlander since the series premiere in 2014 and has won and been nominated for several awards for the role. In 2019, she starred opposite Matt Damon and Christian Bale in the sports drama film Ford v Ferrari. In 2021, she co-starred in director and writer Kenneth Branagh’s Belfast, a semi-autobiographical film about growing up in Northern Ireland at the start of the Troubles in 1969. She was nominated for the Golden Globe Aware, Critics’ Choice Movie Award, Screen Actors Guild Award, and British Academy Film Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance. She married Scottish band manager Tony McGill in 2019 and gave birth to their first son in August 2021. She is fluent in Irish and also speaks some French.
Sam Heughan also has been a part of Outlander since its beginning. Born in Balmaclellan, Scotland, he studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama – now the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland – and graduated in 2003. He was awarded an honorary doctorate at the 2022 commencement ceremony. He has appeared in several films, such as 2016’s The Spy Who Dumped Me, in which he starred as an MI6 agent opposite Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon. In 2020, he launched his whisky brand, The Sassenach, and published a travelogue titled Clanlands: Whisky, Warfare, and a Scottish Adventure Like No Other with Outlander co-star Graham McTavish, who played his uncle Dougal MacKenzie. It reached #1 on the New York Times Best Seller List in multiple categories. Heughan and McTavish also filmed an eight-part miniseries for Starz called Men in Kilts: A Roadtrip with Sam and Graham, released in 2021. The series follows Sam and Graham on – you guessed it – a road trip throughout Scotland, during which they learn about and participate in cultural phenomena, such as the Highland Games, Gaelic lessons, and drinking a wee dram of whisky here and there.
When and Where Can You Watch Outlander Season 7?
Outlander Season 7 will premiere in the Summer of 2023. Starz has confirmed that the season will consist of 16 episodes since Season 6 only consisted of 8 because of the COVID-19 pandemic and Caitríona Balfe’s pregnancy. As in the past, we believe new episodes will air on Sunday nights on Starz, as well as the Starz app. Seasons 1 through 6 is all available to stream on the Starz app now!
Is There a Trailer for Outlander Season 7?
There is no full trailer for Outlander Season 7 just yet, but Starz did upload the first official teaser for the season to their YouTube channel on December 23, 2022. The trailer begins with a close-up of Jamie’s eyes as she narrates a bit about a dream he had. As always, it looks like a lot is about to happen in this coming season. Perhaps the most alarming clip is that of Claire with a noose around her neck at the gallows. Was she finally accused of witchcraft by the pious Tom Christie for her knowledge of herbal medicine and surgery? Or does this have to do with being accused of Malva’s murder? Might we finally have some insight into the somewhat ghostly sighting in the very first episode of the series? The comments on the teaser are full of fans already begging for Season 8, and we’re about to do the same!
Conclusion
While we’re not sure how we can stand to wait another six months or so to see Jamie and Claire on our screens again, we are grateful to have seen the new teaser, and we’re thrilled to have our gears turning again as we speculate what’s to come in Outlander Season 7.
