In 2006, he was cast in his first major film role, portraying Scott Tucker, the title character’s younger brother in John Tucker Must Die.
He was cast in his breakout role in 2007 when he booked The CW’s teen drama series Gossip Girl, based on the book series by Cecily von Ziegasar. Throughout his time on the show, he earned six Teen Choice Award nominations. His performance was praised by both audiences and critics alike, and the role of Dan Humphrey remains one of his most recognizable to date.
Badgley starred as the stepson of a serial killer in the 2009 remake of The Stepfather. Next, he played Todd, the romantic lead, in 2010’s teen comedy Easy A opposite Emma Stone.
He portrayed singer Jeff Buckley in the 2012 biopic Greetings from Tim Buckley, which follows Jeff Buckley’s journey following the death of his father, musician Tim Buckley. Badgley took vocal and guitar lessons for the role. He also starred in Parts per Billion in 2012 and Cymbeline in 2014.
Badgley had been interested in a music career from the time he was a child. In 2014, he formed the band M O T H E R and released a single, “Easy,” on SoundCloud. In September 2018, Badgley began starring in the Netflix series You as Joe Goldberg, an intellectual bookstore employee with dark secrets. IGN called it his best performance and wrote that he was “doing some of his best, most unhinged work in the series.
His charming nature and playful face are the perfect, twisted mask for the “Nice Guy With Control Issues” lurking underneath”. He became a producer of the series during the show’s third season. Part One of the fourth season of the series recently premiered on Netflix on February 9, 2023.

They announced that they were expecting their first child together in February 2020. In 2023, Badgley revealed that he requested for his character on You to have fewer sex scenes moving forward out of respect for his marriage. They have managed to keep their relationship very quiet and private.
Penn Badgley is the only son of Lynne, née Murphy, and Duff Badgley. His father was a newspaper reporter, as well as a carpenter who worked in home construction. In 2008, his father ran for governor of Washington State as the Green Party candidate.
His mother worked various jobs in order to support his acting career, even starting a jewelry design business with his godmother. When he was 12 years old, his parents divorced.
Badgley is the stepfather of Cassius Riley, his wife’s son from her first marriage. Badgley and Kirke welcomed their first child, a boy named James, in August 2020.
We really hope Penn Badgley continues playing the character of Joe Goldberg and in addition also expands his career trajectory to other genres. We can’t wait to see what’s in store for this actor!
