Robert Downey Jr., or as he is famously known, RDJ, was born in Manhattan, New York City, on the 4th of April, 1965, which makes him 58 years old as of 2023. His father was an actor and filmmaker, and his mother was also an actress, so Robert Downey Jr’s career path felt like it was decided from the very beginning.
Downey’s father, aka Robert Downey Sr, was a drug addict, and RDJ admitted that taking drugs with his father formed an emotional bond between the two. RDJ was a child actor who occasionally appeared in his father’s movies, albeit in minor roles.
After his parent’s divorce, RDJ moved to California, but in 1982, he dropped out of Santa Monica High School and moved back to New York, where he decided to pursue acting as a full-time career.
He played minor roles in movies; however, it wasn’t until 1987 that RDJ earned his first lead role in The Pick-up Artist with Molly Ringwald. After that, it was one role after the other, and in 1992 he starred as Charlie Chaplin in the movie Chaplin, for which he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor, although he lost to Al Pacino in the end. RDJ went through career setbacks between 1996 and 2001 when he was arrested numerous times for possessing and consuming hard drugs.
After 2001, RDJ turned his life around for the better and was also offered several roles across Hollywood and was nominated for accolades. Soon, instead of being “that drug addict actor,” he became an inspiration! In 2008, RDJ was cast as Iron Man by Marvel Studios and Jon Favreau, and the rest is history.
In the late 1980s, Downey dated Jennifer Jason Leigh, star of the television series Fast Times at Ridgemont High. He was rumored to have dated actress Winona Ryder in 1991, but the relationship was never confirmed.

Downey then married actress and singer Deborah Falconer in May 1992 after only seeing each other for six weeks. However, when Downey was arrested in 2001, Falconer took their son and left, and the couple realized their divorce in April 2004.
In 2003, Downey met producer Susan Levin, an executive vice president of production at Joel Silver’s company, Silver Pictures. They were married in a Jewish ceremony in 2005. The couple has been going strong since, even though Susan had reservations about Robert initially, considering they worked together.
In 2014, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Susan, and Robert Downey Jr. talked about their quirky relationship, and Susan admitted that she found him “interesting but weird.” Nevertheless, the couple has been going strong since and has two children together.
