Title: In Niger, in the footsteps of Maria …
Short summary: The story follows Maria, a 24-year-old Cameroonian, deported in 2018 form an illegal migrant settlement in Algeria first to the deep South of the country and then to Niger rather than to her native Cameroon; and vowing she’ll try her best to go back to Algeria and attempt the crossing into Morocco and further North to Spain.
Author Chahreddine Berriah has won Migration Media Award in 2017 with his story Sub-Saharan Migrants between Algeria and Morocco: the Damned of Africa which he followed up with the story The Ghetto of Maghnia: the Pre-human Lives of Sub-Saharans. In 2018 he won again a Migration Media Award with the story On the Forsaken Banks of Jorgi Ravine about the illegal migrant’s ghetto from which Maria was deportted.
