Title: I nuovi Desaparecidos. Dalla Tunisia all’Italia come profughi. Poi spariti nel silenzio
Short summary : In 2011 and 2012, in the aftermath of the departure of Ben Ali from Tunisia, thousands of Tunisians left for Europe. But hundreds of them vanished in the sea. The association of the mothers of disappeared Tunisians, cannot cope the trauma of having a son died in the sea. But some of them are convinced that their sons are still alive. « I have received a phone call » Fatma Kassraoui recalls, « I have seen him on a TV news programme arriving in Lampedusa » said Fadila. They both are inside the association of the mothers of the disappeared Tunisians.
For the Forum of economic and social issues, there are around 1500 young Tunisians who went missing, « 503 families contacted us, but most of the families didn’t, mostly those living in the inner part of the country ».
The situation of the mothers are very harsh, « two of them immolate them publicly » explained Hedhili, to bring attention to the issue and put pressure for the opening of a investigative commission.
After years, the Tunisian minister opened the case, and started to negotiate with the Italian counterpart to put light on the event. But there are very poor data on the issues, and most of the actors believe in the death of these boys.
Between 2011 and 2013, 7500 young Tunisians left to join Syria, and more then 20.000 tried to join Europe. For the League of Human Rights, it is or the sea of the jihad, « it means that Tunisia needs to put efforts in work, schools and youth activities ».
