Title: “Stuck in Europe’s Backyard”
Short summary: The report “Stuck in Europe’s Backyard” was conducted in Greece, a few weeks after the effective date of the agreement between EU and Turkey to limit the arrival of migrants and refugees from the Aegean Sea. The pictures of beaches covered in orange life vests and abandoned boats had stopped. The remains of the drama that devastated Lesbos over the previous year had been concentrated at the top of a mountain. But over 50 thousand people were stranded in that country, haunted by the possibility of deportation. We felt the need to give faces to those figures. Thus, the story starts with a map, which turns into a showcase of particular stories, told in the first person and recreated with the help of animation. The report focuses the impact of the agreement, the way local institutions dealt with the application of new rules and how migrants perceived them. The work on the ground was made by one single journalist, who produced, interviewed, filmed, photographed and recorded sound.
These are people haunted by the fear of being deported. As Europe closes its doors, more than 50.000 migrants and refugees remain blocked in Greece.
