Tom Hiddleston is the British heartthrob who has made his way very successfully in Hollywood, while also being a shining presence worldwide. Most of you might recognize Hiddleston as Loki from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but his career trajectory is far more vast than that, and over the years, he has gained popularity for his work, demeanor, and for being one of the most unproblematic men in the industry, in fact, Taylor Swift even wrote a song about him and it wasn’t even bad!
Most recently, you might have come across Tom Hiddleston in the Loki series on Disney+ and his upcoming series will be Loki Season 2, so it’s safe to say that’s been his most popular role so far. Over the years, Hiddleston has been nominated and won several awards and accolades for his performances, including Primetime Emmys and Golden Globes! There’s a lot more to Tom Hiddleston that his fans don’t know about just yet, and we’re here to tell you all about him, from his net worth to his biography, and much more:
As of 2022, Tom Hiddleston’s net worth is estimated to be $40 million. For over 20 years, Hiddleston has been acting professionally, but we’re sure the largest deposits in his bank account were paid by Marvel Studios for his work as Loki, having portrayed the Norse God of Mischief in multiple films and an eponymous original TV series on Disney+.
Thomas William Hiddleston was born on February 9, 1981, in Westminster, London, England. He was raised in Wimbledon as a young child, later moving to a village near Oxford for his father’s work. He began boarding at Windlesham House School at seven years old, moving to the Dragon School in Oxford only a year later. Hiddleston’s parents divorced when he was 12 years old.
He began studying and boarding at Eton College at 13 years old. He earned a double first in Classics at Pembroke College at the University of Cambridge. While attending Cambridge, he starred in a production of Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire, catching the eye of talent agent Lorraine Hamilton. He went on to study at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and graduated in 2005.
While still in school, Hiddleston began to book professional roles on television, including that of Randolph Churchill, the son of Winston Churchill, in the BBC/HBO drama The Gathering Storm. He was cast in his first film role after graduating from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. He played Oakley in Joanna Hogg’s Unrelated. In 2007, he won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Newcomer in a Play for his role in Cheek by Jowl Productions’ Cymbeline.
Hiddleston’s major breakthrough came when director Kenneth Branagh, with whom he’d worked on Wallander, invited him to audition for Marvel Studios’ Thor (2011). Initially, he auditioned for the role of Thor, but Branagh decided Hiddleston was a better fit for the role of the antagonist, Loki. In the same year, he portrayed author F. Scott Fitzgerald in Woody Allen’s fantasy comedy film Midnight in Paris.
Hiddleston has continued to act in film and the theatre. Notably, he portrayed country music singer Hank Williams in the 2015 biopic I Saw the Light, alongside Elizabeth Olsen as his first wife, Audrey Williams. In 2017, again directed by Kenneth Branagh, he played the title character in a limited run of Shakespeare’s Hamlet to raise money for his alma mater, the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts.
Hiddleston has a number of upcoming projects in the works. He is set to star in James Ivory’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s Richard II. He will also star in and executive produce the Apple TV+ series The White Darkness, and the most anticipated Loki Season 2 on Disney+.
Hiddleston has done his best to keep his love life somewhat private over the years, telling GQ in 2017, “A relationship in the limelight… A relationship always takes work. A relationship in the limelight takes work. And it’s not just the limelight. It’s everything else.” Here’s what we do know about the British heartthrob and his past and present relationships.
Hiddleston met British actress Susannah Fielding on the set of the BBC’s Wallander in 2008, and the two dated for three years, splitting amicably sometime in 2011. He also dated American actress Jessica Chastain and British music producer Jane Arthy in 2013.
In 2015, after working on I Saw the Light together, Hiddleston and his Marvel co-star Elizabeth Olsen were rumored to be casually dating. Olsen brushed off the rumors in September of that year.
Hiddleston began seeing music superstar Taylor Swift sometime around May 2016. This marked the first time Hiddleston was open about a relationship of his with the media, telling The Hollywood Reporter, “Well, um. How best to put this? That notion is — look, the truth is that Taylor Swift and I are together and we’re very happy. Thanks for asking. That’s the truth. It’s not a publicity stunt.” The two did not try to hide their relationship, frequently allowing themselves to be seen out on dates and kissing in public. They split sometime in September 2017.
Hiddleston met actress Zawe Ashton in 2019 while working on the West End production of Betrayal. Rumors of their relationship first began to swirl in July 2020, and their relationship seemed to be confirmed in September 2021 when Ashton accompanied Hiddleston to the Tony Awards in New York City. The pair became engaged in March 2022 and announced that they were expecting their first child in June of that same year. It is believed that Ashton gave birth sometime in October 2022.
Hiddleston’s parents are Diana Patricia (née Servaes) and Dr. James Norman Hiddleston. His mother is an arts administrator and former stage manager from Suffolk, while his father is a physical chemist and former manager of a biotechnology company, born in Greenock, Scotland. Hiddleston has two sisters, Emma and Sarah. His younger sister Emma is an actress, and his older sister Sarah is a journalist in India.
Tom Hiddleston has a long way to go, whether it’s in Marvel, British film and TV, or just Hollywood in general and we can’t wait to see more of him. He will continue being one of the smoothest, most sophisticated, and most brilliant actors of this generation!
