Zoë Yadira Saldaña-Perego was born Zoë Yadira Saldaña-Nazario on June 19, 1978, in Passaic, New Jersey. She and her family moved to the Dominican Republic when she was about nine years old after her father died in a motor vehicle accident.
`She is ¾ Dominican and ¼ Puerto Rican. She studied dance for many years, at the ECOS Espacio de Danza Academy to learn different styles. Ballet is her favorite form of dance, but she stopped dancing ballet because of the toll it took on her body. She also said that she was too proud to only be in the corps de ballet.
Saldana and her family moved to New York after her sophomore year of high school, and she transferred to Newtown High School in Elmhurst, Queens, New York. She began performing with the theatre group Faces in Brooklyn in 1995. The group performed original plays aimed at teenagers and young adults which explored topics like substance use and abuse and sex.
At this time, she also performed with New York Youth Theater. A talent agency recruited her after watching her perform in their production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. These experiences led to her being cast in her first role in the 2000’s Center Stage, in which she played a ballet student named Eva Rodriguez.

Saldana has two sisters, Cisely and Mariel.
